The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, which is a
partnership of Lewis and Clark Community College (LCCC), the Illinois
Natural History Survey, and the University of Illinois ACES Department
of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES), intends to
offer student internships for the summer of 2008. Funds are available
at a rate of $4,000 for a 10-week internship (May 19August 5, 2008).
Student interns will be responsible for their own housing and food.
Depending on the nature of the research, students may be required to
reside in the following areas throughout Illinois: Alton/Godfrey,
Carbondale, Champaign/Urbana, Edwardsville, Havana, Jerseyville/Kampsville,
Peoria, Rock Island, Springfield, St. Louis (MO) or Sullivan during
the internship.
Field-based internships will be
available in the following areas:
River, floodplain, and watershed
ecology and management;
Population and community ecology of
riverine and floodplain biota;
Environmental education and
communications including written, spoken, audio and video;
Archeological education, outreach
and cultural stewardship;
Economics of river communities and
river resources, viability of nature based tourism;
Policy or legal issues involving
waterways; and/or
Public attitudes or social issues
related to the management of large rivers and their watersheds.
In addition to internships offered by
the partners, special internships are being considered with:
Lieutenant Governors office in
Springfield, Illinois;
Illinois RiverWatch program;
US Corps of Engineers St. Louis and
Rock Island, Illinois districts;
Southern Illinois University
(Carbondale and Edwardsville);
Illinois State Natural Resources
and Conservation Service; and/or
Illinois Forestry Development
Council.

Interns will be instructed and
supervised by faculty/advisors from the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign, Lewis and Clark Community College, the Illinois
Natural History Survey, SIU Carbondale, SIU Edwardsville, Bradley
University, Center for American Archeology, Jersey County Flood Plain
and Building Permit Administration Building, Madison County Planning
and Development, National Great Rivers Museum, Truman State
University, the Illinois
Lieutenant Governors office and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
In addition to the specific faculty
requirements, all interns will participate in the following:
All interns
will be required to participate in a one-week intern orientation in
the Alton area. Housing and two meals per day will be provided for the
orientation week.
All
interns and their faculty advisors will be required to attend a
symposium and make a presentation about their project.
All interns will prepare a 7-10
page paper and a poster describing their summer internship and present
this information at the symposium.
UIUC students completing the
requirements for the internship may be eligible for course credit
through the Department of NRES. Students attending other institutions
must check on course credit through their institution. Preference will
be given to applicants who have completed their sophomore year of
college coursework and major in natural resources, biology, aquatic
systems, public policy or a related field.
