Sustainability

NGRECC works hard to promote green initiatives and sustainability.

The center’s future field station is a clear example of its commitment to the cause. The building will be a model of “green construction,” with minimal environmental impact, integrated renewable energy systems, and internal recycling systems. NGRREC officials are even seeking platinum-level LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its energy resource efficiency.

Individually, the center’s partners are doing their part to help sustain our great river system. Lewis and Clark has signed three major sustainability commitments, has two institutional memberships, and is a part of numerous partnerships centered around sustainability, among other activities. As for the U of I, their newly formed Office of Sustainability recently created a draft Strategic Vision for Sustainability at Illinois, communicating the collective aspirations of the office towards sustainability over the long term.
