Alton, IL - Mississippi River Backwater

Ellis Bay is located in the backwater of the Mississippi River near Alton, Illinois. It was the original testing site for the first GREON buoy and is the longest active GREON monitoring site in our network. The GREON buoy in Ellis Bay provides information on the quality of water within this shallow backwater ecosystem. The data can also be compared to other buoys in the main channel or at other backwater locations to provide information on the degree of interaction between water in the main channel and backwater, especially during episodes of rising or lowering river stages. The station is also located at an LTRM site, which is managed by the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS).
