On behalf of the
citizens of Illinois, I am honored to welcome you to the Many Waters,
Many Lands: 2008 International Symposium on River Management and
Ecosystem Services. Rivers and their tributaries have connected
economies and cultures throughout human history, weaving throughout
the world with no regard for manmade borders. In this way, the rich
resources of the world’s rivers are shared, and so we also share a
responsibility to protect our waterways. An international conference
on river management and ‘ecosystem services’ – or the economic
and societal benefits provided by healthy ecosystems – is a fitting
way to share strategies and discuss policies to protect our natural
resources. And the city of Chicago, a global city that stretches along
the shores of Lake Michigan, is proud to host this important gathering
of the world’s experts, policymakers and concerned citizens. We in
Illinois invite the leaders of cities and states the world over to
join us at the Many Waters, Many Lands symposium. I look forward to
meeting you in Chicago in September 2008.
Sincerely, Pat
Quinn
Lt. Governor
